Mohiuddin Nawab is one of the most prominent novelists and writers of Pakistan, was born on 4 September 1930 in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. Nawab got his high school education in Kharagpur, his birthplace. He migrated to Dhaka in 1947 following the division. He and his family moved to Karachi in 1971 after the collapse of Dhaka. His grandfather was an interior decorator, and his father was employed in the railway department.
Nawab began writing romantic stories under a pseudonym. At 23, his first story, “Ek Dewar Ek Shagaaf,” was published in the film magazine “Roman” around 1970 under his original name. After struggling for a long time as a writer, he finally caught the attention of Meraj Rasool, editor of Suspense Digest. Over the next 40 years, he regularly wrote for suspense and Jasoosi digests.
Nawab wrote about 600 romantic, social, spy fiction, and historical novels and short stories for famous Urdu digests like Jasoosi Digest and Suspense Digest. His notable stories include Mohabbat Ka Azab, Iman Ka Safar, Wapsi, and Adha Chehra. His poetry and prose collection has also been published under the title “Du Tara.” Nawab also wrote scripts for a few films, but his longest novel, “Devta,” catapulted Nawab to the heights of fame. Devta is Mohiuddin Nawab’s most famous novel, which was serialized in Suspense Digest from 1977 to 2010.
Nawab began writing Devta In February 1977, which quickly became the most famous digest story. Readers were anxiously waiting for its next episode. Devata increased the monthly sales of Suspense Digest more than any of its rival digests, and Nawab became the busiest writer of the era. The novel Devata continued for 33 years, culminating in 396 episodes. It was later published in book form in 56 volumes. Devata ranks among the longest novels in history.
Nawab has written hundreds of romantic and social stories, compiled into about 200 books. The main themes of Nawab’s writings are Romance and social issues, which mercilessly expose society’s bare truths. Witty phrases and creative metaphors were his most potent weapons. Nawab was well aware of men’s harsh nature, women’s soft psychology, and the duality of human society. He used this insight in his writings uniquely and unusually. He fused fiction and fact in a way that few writers could attempt.
His characters are familiar faces that readers see around them, like a worried father, a caring mother, an unemployed youth, a girl waiting for a marriage proposal, a hard worker, a motor mechanic, a cleric, etc. The plot of his stories usually revolves around the general environment of everyday life. He puts words of social wisdom in the mouths of ordinary people and awakens awareness.
