Umeed lost her father at an early age and had to drop out of school prematurely to take care of her family. She is engaged with Jahanzeb and loves him to the point of insanity.
She has to take care of her family after her father’s death. When her fianc “Jahanzeb” left the country for education and employment, she also moved to Lahore for job. In Lahore, she lives in a girls’ hostel and works hard all day to send money to her family, thinking that one day all her problems will be over, especially when Jahanzeb returns home. Her engagement lasted for 9 years until Jahanzeb returned.
Jahanzeb is neither married nor in love with anyone else, but the modern American environment has changed Jahanzeb’s thinking. A few days before the wedding, Jahanzeb threatened to break off the engagement and said that he would not marry her unless she complied with his wishes. Despite his strong desire to please Jahanzeb, his pure upbringing does not allow him to go astray. Eventually, her relationship with Jahanzeb breaks down, leaving her hopeless.
When she is heartbroken and deprived of any hope, a young foreigner, “Daniel Edgar”, suddenly enters her life. The beautifully told story of the human psyche is caught between love, religion and the right path. This is a simple story which revolves around a girl whose life difficulties and circumstances are a part of our daily society. The protagonist creates an instant soft spot in the reader’s heart.
A person’s sense of belonging to Allah cannot be described in words and we cannot judge the purity of that person’s faith. However, the author has clarified the difference between desire, love and lust. There is a balance between love for a person and duty for Allah. Overall this book is a good writing.
Umaira Ahmed is one of the most widely read and well-known Urdu fiction novelist and screenplay writers of Pakistan. She completed her Masters in English Literature from Murray College, Sialkot. She later became an English language lecturer for A and A level at Army Public College, Sialkot. However, she quit her job after few years to focus on writing.
She started her writing career in 1998 at a very young age. Her early stories were published in the monthly Urdu Digests and later in the form of books. She has written several books, including full novels and short stories. However, it was his novel “Peer e Kamil” that became his identity. Her novels and stories are even projected on TV dramas and they also carve a great spot in the heart of viewers.
