This novel was published/Written in 1957 and is considered one of the greatest novels in Urdu literature. It is the very first attempt to highlight “slum-dwellers’ struggles in newborn Pakistan.
The Story’s central idea is strongly pro-socialist, capitalism is mostly evil, and money is society’s root cause of perversion. The plot is all about slum-dwellers’ miseries, the desperate measures they have to take to get by, and their exploitation at the hands of affluent people. The story also touches on a couple of sensitive issues, including incest and the use of religion to gain financial favors.
Although the characterization is not very strong, the prose is lucid, and Siddiqui’s use of that time’s slang is quite vivid. Siddiqui also quite accurately depicted the everyday lives of slum-dwellers. All in all, reading Khuda ki Basti turned out to be a good experience.
