Mohabbaton ke Aaseb is an Urdu translation of the novella “Of Love and Other Demons” by Colombian novelist and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, adapted into Urdu by Zia-ul-Haq. This work explores love, superstition, religious extremism, and the complex aspects of human psychology where reality and illusion, faith and madness seem to merge.

The narrative revolves around a twelve-year-old girl, Sierva María, raised among African slaves. Following a bite from a rabid dog, the changes in her behaviour are interpreted not as an illness, but as the result of demonic possession. Ultimately, under the pretext of exorcism, she is confined to a convent, where the responsibility for her “treatment” and religious purification falls to Father Cayetano Delaura. In this extraordinary situation, an emotional bond emerges that sparks an intense conflict between religious duty, social constraints, and human desire. Father DeLaura falls in love with Cierva Maria, and thus a tragic story is born in which love itself becomes a test of its own existence.

Through this story, Marquez portrays a society where ignorance, religious extremism, and superstition have a profound impact on human lives. Attributing an innocent girl to mysterious forces instead of understanding her natural personality is actually a reflection of a mindset that views everything unusual through the lens of fear and belief. In the novel, along with the conflict between love and religion, themes such as slavery, class division, and human freedom also come to the fore in their full significance.

Mohabbaton ke Aaseb is not merely a tale of unrequited or failed love; it serves as a searching critique of societal attitudes that are all too quick to label innocence as a crime, love as a sin, and dissent as the work of the devil. Márquez’s signature style—infused with magical realism—lends even greater poignancy to the tragedy of the story. This novella compels the reader to reconsider love, faith, and human freedom, leaving an enduring resonance in both the mind and the heart.
