Bagh o Bahar is a classic tale of four Darweshes written by Mir Amman Dehlvi at Fort William College at the request of John Gilchrist. Fort William College was established to acquaint the British with the local languages. Mir Amman has done such magic in this classic tale that as long as the Urdu language is alive, it will remain popular, and its value will not diminish with the passage of time.

No other Urdu story has matched the popularity of “Bagh-o-Bihar” in Urdu prose. Thus, this story is a milestone in Urdu prose because, for the first time in Urdu prose, simple phrases were used, which was made possible by this story. Later on, Ghalib took it to the peak of perfection. Bagh-o-Bahar is one of the few Urdu prose works that will endure and be read with interest.

The book Bagh-o-Bihar was translated from Persian into Urdu and released in 1804 with the help of John Gilchrist. But when it was printed, it had a lot of errors, a list of which was published at the end of the book. Rashid Hassan Khan then edited the text in 1992, which was much appreciated, and he gave importance to the London manuscript.

But in 2012, Dr. Feroz Ahmed got a manuscript available in Jaipur, which was better than all the other manuscripts. That is why he has tried so hard to republish it. The manuscript, which was declared fundamental, was written on March 13, 1832, according to 10 Shawal 1247 AH, and its errors were corrected. It is, therefore, essential to study this text to compare it with other printed editions and to know which edition is more accurate.
