Bedil Book by Khwaja Ibadullah Akhtar. This book contains a comprehensive work on the life, poetry and philosophy of the famous Persian poet Abul Maani Mirza Abdul Qadir Bedil Dehlavi. Institute of Islamic Culture Lahore published this book in 1961. The book is written in Urdu and covers 404 pages.
Hazrat Abul Maani Mirza Abdul Qadir Bedil Dehlavi was born in 1644 AD in Azimabad (now Patna) in the Bihar province of India. He belonged to the Chughtai Barlas tribe. His father, Mirza Abdul Khaliq, was associated with the Qadiriya chain, so Baidal was also named “Abdul Qadir” in reference to “Ghous-ul-Azam Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani”.
Mirza Bedil learned the basics of Sufism from Mirza Qalandar, but later he regularly studied almost all the Imams of Sufism. This is the reason that the subject of Sufism also comes out in full form in his poetry, in addition to other topics. Apart from Sufism, the elements of philosophy and thought are also prominent in his work. He has a different view about life, existence, the universe and the colourfulness of nature, and that’s why sometimes the philosophical subjects in his poems become difficult for the readers to understand, however, Bedil himself continues to explain it from time to time. Much has been written about Bedil in both India and Iran and this book is one of them.
In this book, while presenting the poetry of Bedel, his biographical circumstances are also highlighted. At the beginning of the book, there is a scholarly discussion of the autobiography “Chahar Anasir” written by Bedel himself, which plays an important role in Bedil’s poetry. The view from which commentators saw Bedil has also been mentioned, after which research material on Baidal’s Masnavis, Rubai and Dewan Baidal has been presented.
