Mirwais Khan Hotak, also known as Shah Mirwais Ghilji, was born in 1673 to a wealthy and political family in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The family has long been considered socially and politically very strong. Mirwais Hotak’s father’s name was Saleem Khan, and his mother’s was Nazo Tokhi, also called Nazo Ana. His grandfather, Karam Khan, was elected chief of the Hotak tribe or Hotak family. Hotak is a well-known branch of the Ghilgi tribe, considered the strongest and most politically and socially stable of all Pashtun tribes in Afghanistan. Mirwais Hotak was married to the Khanzada Sadozai, who belonged to the Durrani tribe.
Mirwais Nika founded the Hotak Empire, which lasted from 1709 to 1738 in the Afghanistan and Iran border region. After the assassination of Gurgin Khan, governor of the Safavid Empire, in April 1709, Mirwais declared Greater Kandahar, now in southern Afghanistan.
Mirwais died in November 1715. The people of Kandahar Province call Mirwais Hotak by the name of “Mirwais Nika” or “Mirwais Baba” which means “Mirwais Grandfather” or “Mirwais Baba”.
It is said that the Ghilzai tribe or Ghilji tribe were originally from the Ghor region of Afghanistan and later on migrated here after gaining territory in southeastern Afghanistan.
