Garcin de Tassy Ke Tamheedi Khutbe, by Garcin de Tassy. Garcin de Tassy Ke Tamheedi Khutbe, is a collection of introductory sermons from 1850 to 1855 by the famous French linguist Professor Joseph Garcin de Tassy. These sermons were delivered prior to the lectures on the Indian language, specifically Urdu. Anjuman-e-Taraqqi Urdu Hind published the book in 1940 after identifying and correcting the flaws in the original version by Abdul Sattar Siddiqui.

French scholar Joseph Garcin de Tassy deserves special praise Among the Orientalists because he had a special affection for Urdu. He devoted his life to the promotion of Urdu. Garcin de Tassy wrote, read, and contributed to advancing Urdu literature and language for half of his life. This relates to a period in which dictionaries, grammar, literary histories, and criticism—among the foundational works of the Urdu language—were either completely absent or in the early stages of development. The work he did proved to be a memorable one for future researchers.

De Tassy was born on January 25, 1791, or 1794, in Marseilles, where his father, Joseph Jean-Garcin, traded. De Tassy was interested in studying Oriental languages from a very young age, so after completing his formal education, he started studying Arabic at the age of twenty. He soon realized that he could not satisfy his curiosity by staying in Marseilles, so in 1817, he moved from Marseilles to Paris, where he began to study Eastern languages with the famous Orientalist of his time, Silvestre de Sacy.

After four years of continuous hard work, he succeeded in mastering Arabic, Persian, and Turkish languages. At the end of his studies, he published Al-Maqdisi’s book, Kashf al-Asrar an Hukam al-Tayyur al-Azhar, with the correct text and French translation. Later, on the recommendation of his teacher, Silvestre de Sacy, he was appointed secretary of the French College for Eastern Studies. He married in December 1821 of the same year.

When the famous Asiatic Society was established in France in 1822, he was appointed its Honorary Secretary and Librarian. It was the time when he realized the need to learn and master Urdu, so he traveled to England and learned the language from Englishmen who had lived in India and who had learned and worked on the rules and lexicography of the Indian language (Urdu).

On the advice of Silvestre, when the teaching of the Urdu language was formally arranged in Paris, he first became a professor of Urdu temporarily. Later, this appointment was given permanent status, and for the rest of his life, he taught Urdu in France and made various attempts to make it popular.

He kept abreast of correspondence with academic associations and literary institutes in India and the United Kingdom, solicited books and newspapers, sought copies of rare books، and at the beginning of each new Christian year, he would give a detailed sermon on the academic and literary activities of the past year which contained detailed information about Urdu books, magazines, newspapers, and authors, which continued from 1850 to 1869.

The book under review, “Garcin de Tassy Ke Tamheedi Khutbe,” is a collection of speeches delivered at the beginning of his lectures from 1850 to 1855. De Tassy was deeply interested in compiling a history of Urdu language and literature, which is also evident in his sermons. This book also belongs to the same series about which Maulana Abdul Haq has written in the case of “Maqalat e Garcin de Tassy.”
