Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Shakhsiyat o Siyasat book authored by Saleem Javed. This book analyzes the personality of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and his political struggle in Urdu. Maulana Fazlur Rehman is a right-wing Pakistani Deobandi politician and current president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI). He is the acting president of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a coalition of establishment political parties formed to resist the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf administration of Imran Khan. He was a member of the National Assembly between 1988 and May 2018 and served as Leader of the Opposition from 2004 to 2007. Maulana was a part of MRD, formed against Zia-ul-Haq’s dictatorship.

One should not write a book about a living person because there is no guarantee that a person will not change (neither the author nor his compliment). However, there are some reasons that you will realize after reading this book.

I think it is very important to get acquainted with the mood and beliefs of the author before reading a book. As you read this book, you will know that the author is grateful to the Ulama but has no family or kinship relations with Madrassas or Ulama. Therefore, the author’s understanding of religion is based on the companionship of some Ulama or personal study. He does not insist on the correctness of his understanding of religion.

The author is a serious student of history and politics. Based on this study, he feels Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam has a decisive and positive role in the political history of Pakistan. He has a permanent connection with the personality and politics of Maulana Fazlur Rehman for 35 years but has no personal or party affiliation with Maulana. Therefore, he is not familiar with Maulana’s domestic political policy. The analysis under review is an unbiased analysis of the average Pakistani based on no deliberate misrepresentation.

Saleem Javed’s practical religious activities are limited to preaching work only. Still, he is a supporter of secular ideas and he considers secularism as an integral part of religion and has tried to explain his position with argument. However, he does not insist on the validity of his argument.

The author strongly supports Deoband’s political strategy and considers it to be in accordance with democratic and secular principles. He has seen Jamiat Ulema in the mirror of secularism. He believes that the basis of the political struggle of the Deoband school of thought is to give a peaceful economic enrichment to this compelled humanity that the oppressive upper classes have crushed. For the same reason, they have clashed with the imperialism of all times.

The media, under the influence of the upper classes, not only does not allow the services of Deobandi scholars to come to the fore but continues to play a leading role in their assassination. The current Ameer of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Fazlur Rehman, has been specifically targeted for targeting the same character assassination of Deobandi Ulema.

Maulana’s character assassination is the character assassination of Jamiat Ulema, and Maulana’s defense is the defense of Jamiat Ulema. The author believes that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam is not the personal political party of Maulana Fazlur Rehman but the centenary political legacy of the Deobandi Ulema to which the honor of the Deobandi Ulema is attached. So, the final destination of Maulana’s character assassination campaign is to prove all the Deobandi scholars corrupt and then, under the guise of this, to attack the essence of Islam. For this reason, defending Maulana Fazlur Rehman is not a defense of his personality but is considered necessary for the honor of all the scholars of the Deoband. In addition, the author believes that for a country like Pakistan, the policy of secularism, i.e., “live and let live,” is the best. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam is a political party that wants to make its case in front of the parliament with arguments and does not want to make it by force. So one mindset belongs to Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the other to Mullah Fazlullah.

One of the reasons for writing this book is to make people realize that by degrading Maulana Fazlur Rehman and putting him against the wall, the indirect meaning is to hold Pakistan hostage to an extremist mentality.

In this book, along with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, you will also find about Imran Khan because the rain of accusations against Maulana comes from Pakistan Tehreek Insaf. Imran Khan often says to himself that if I am wrong, then the government of Nawaz Sharif has a duty to arrest me. The only thing they can say is that now it is your government. If you think Maulana is wrong, arrest him. But aside from Imran, and Nawaz wrestling, the arguments have been discussed.

The author is a secular writer who has occasionally written about Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, among other topics. Such articles, which have been published on various occasions, have been added after some minor revisions to maintain the quality of the article. Thus the book is a collection of articles under different headings.

In this book, you will often find reminiscence of Imran Khan. The author believes that, like Asghar Khan, Imran Khan will become a legend in politics in a few years, but at the moment, the Pakistani media is under the control of Imran Khan and his sponsors. If so, the Reminiscence of this man also becomes necessary.

In this book, you will also read about the Tablighi Jamaat, although it is a completely non-political Jamaat. This is because Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam is a religious party, although its field differs from education, preaching, purification, jihad, or debate (scholars understand this point well). However, the public’s contact with religion is mostly due to the Tablighi Jamaat, and the people see the other religious parties in the context of the Tablighi Jamaat. So, you will also find a reference to the Tablighi Jamaat in the book.

Since this book refers to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s advocacy, it cannot be called a balanced analysis in general. The author has to defend his client in any case. However, if a reader reads this book without prejudice, his conscience will surely testify that a blind imitator did not write this book.
