Yusuf bin Tashfeen, as usual, is another masterpiece historical novel by Naseem Hijazi. This historical novel describes the circumstances and events of the founding ruler of Morocco, Youssef Ibn Tashfeen. The novel gives a full account of the causes of the decline of the Islamic Empire in Andalusia and the plight of the Muslims.

In a region of this earth, the human eye has hardly seen the scenes of rising and fall that are seen in the history of Andalusia. If in one chapter of the history of Andalusia we find solace and hope in seeing the rise of the Muslim Ummah, then in the next chapter we feel sadness and despair after reading the stories of decline.

Yusuf ibn Tashfin is mentioned in the middle period of Islamic history of Andalusia when the Muslims were at war with each other over the conspiracies of a Christian king named Alfonso and the future of Andalusia was at stake. In such a situation, the leading Mujahideen and scholars of Andalusia sought the help of Yusuf ibn Tashfeen, the Amir of Marabatin in Africa. Amir Yusuf accepted their request and reached Andalusia with his army defeated the Christian king Alfonso and supported the sinking ship of Andalusia. He abolished the small Muslim kingdoms and established a new Muslim state in Andalusia, thus beginning the period of the Marabati dynasty in Andalusia.

Naseem Hijazi, whose original novel is Sharif Hussain, was Pakistan’s leading author, historical novelist, and travel writer. Naseem Hijazi is best known for writing Islamic historical novels. Hijazi was born in undivided India and after independence, he migrated to Pakistan and settled in Lahore. His novels based on Islamic history are considered to have a unique place in Urdu literature.

This book by Naseem Hijazi is the only book in the Urdu language that has been written so far about the personality of Yusuf Ibn Tashfeen and his deeds. Most of the writers of history have written a lot about our other famous heroes like Khalid bin Waleed, Sultan Salahuddin Ayubi, Muhammad bin Qasim, Mahmud Ghaznavi, etc, but Naseem Hijazi has also focused on the unfamous periods of Islamic history. He has written extensively on the rise and fall of the Islamic Empire, from the time of the Rightly Guided Caliphs to the partition of the subcontinent.

In the light of the sun, we forget the stars which guide the caravans which are wandering in the darkness of night. The conquests of every nation are attributed to a great man, and the historian’s pen is always unable to mention the anonymous soldiers whose bloodsheds new titles on history. Every nation considers its majesty Taj Mahal as the interpretation of a dream of a Shah Jahan but the majesty of every Taj Mahal is due to the grace of these silent architects whose sweat gives the stone a pearl luster and flower blossoms.

This book is a chapter in the history of Andalusia written with the blood and sweat of anonymous volunteers of a nation. Yusuf ibn Tashfeen was a ray of sunshine that brought a message of freedom and happiness to the Muslims of Andalusia, but his appearance was a reward for the sacrifices of the anonymous mujahideen who raised the light of hope in the dark nights of pain and suffering. And those who have fought against the winds and storms of time in every age of our history. Thanks to their selfless sacrifices, our past is proud and their courage is a beacon for future generations.
