Maqalat e Garcin De Tassy Jild 1 published by Anjuman-e-Taraqqi Urdu Pakistan. The book under review is a collection of annual lectures by the famous French Professor and linguist Joseph Garson Datasi. The French scholar Joseph Garcin De Tassy deserves special praise among the Orientalists who loved Urdu and strived for its promotion.

He devoted his life to the service of Urdu and spent 50 years of his life reading and writing the language and its literature. Even then, some basic works, such as Lughaat, Grammar, literary history, and criticism, were either in their infancy or were completely missing. It was De Tassy’s work that proved to be a memorable one for future researchers. “Maqalat-e-Garcin De Tassy” is a collection of annual lectures on “Urdu language” by the said Professor. The lectures included in this volume are from 1870 to 1873.

De Tassy was born on January 25, 1794, in Marseilles. In 1817, he went to Paris and became a student of the famous Orientalist and linguist Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838) to learn Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Garcin de Tassy learned and wrote about Urdu while living in France and also traveled to England to learn the language.

He became a professor at the School for Living Oriental Languages in 1828. After ten years, he was selected for the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, dedicated to humanity. De Tassy was one of the founding members of the Societe Asiatique (Asiatic Society) and later became president of the same society.

Although he was initially interested in studying Islam and Arabic, he later became interested in Urdu, which was then called ‘Hindustani.’ He spent his entire life teaching, writing, and researching Urdu until he died in 1878.

His work can be divided into three categories, i.e., writings on Urdu Literature in French, translation of Urdu poetry into French, Editing and compiling Urdu literary works from Urdu into French, including translation of Mir Amman’s famous work Bagh-o-Bahar.

De Tassy heavily relied on books, magazines, and newspapers published in India for his research and criticism work. Some of his sources also came from English magazines and newspapers. He also gave annual lectures on Urdu literature and presented his analysis of essential works published throughout the year.

These and some other translations of Datasi’s works were initially published in the quarterly journal “Urdu” of Anjuman-e-Taraqqi Urdu Pakistan and were later compiled in the form of a book entitled Khutbat-e-Garcin de Tassy and Maqalaat-e-Garcin de Tassy. Dr. Hameedullah reviewed the translation of Volume 1 and corrected the errors. De Tassy’s work is critical because he did it when the locals themselves did not bother to record the history of Urdu literature, and the means of communication were also missing.
