Maqalat e Garcin de Tassy Jild 2 by Anjuman e Taraqqi Urdu India Pdf Free Download
Maqalat e Garcin de Tassy Jild 2 was published by Anjuman e Taraqqi Urdu India in 1943. This book is a collection of annual lectures by the famous French professor and linguist Joseph Garcin de Tassy. Among the Orientalists who loved Urdu and strived for its promotion, the French scholar Joseph Garcin de Tassy deserves special praise. He devoted his life to the promotion of the Urdu language and spent 50 years of his life reading and writing the language and its literature.
The “Maqalat-e-Garcin de Tassy” is a collection of annual lectures on “Urdu language” by the said Professor. The lectures included in this volume are from 1874 to 1877. At that time some basic works of Urdu language such as Lughat, grammar, literary history, and criticism, were either in their early stages or were completely missing. It was Garcin’s work that proved to be a memorable one for future researchers.
Professor Garcin de Tassy was born on January 25, 1794, in Marseilles. He went to Paris in 1817 and became a student of the famous Orientalist and linguist Sir Silvestre de Sacy, to learn Arabic, Persian and Turkish. De Tassy learned and wrote about Urdu while living in France, and also traveled to England to learn the language.
He became a professor at the School for Living Oriental Languages in 1828, and after ten years he was selected for the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, which is dedicated to humanity. De Tassy was one of the founding members of the Societe Asiatique (Asian Society) and later became its president.
Although De Tassy was initially interested in the study of Islam and Arabic, he later became interested in Urdu and Hindi, then called the ‘Indian’ language. He spent his entire life teaching, writing, and researching Urdu until his death in 1878. His work can be divided into three categories: Writings on Urdu Literature in French; Editing and compiling Urdu literary works from Urdu into French including translation of Mir Amman’s famous Bagh-o-Bahar and translating Urdu poetry into the French language.
Professor De Tassy relied heavily on books, magazines, and newspapers published in India for his research and critical work. Some of their sources also came from English magazines and newspapers. He also gave annual lectures on Urdu literature and presented his articles on important works published throughout the year.
This one and some other translations of de Tassy’s works were initially published in the quarterly journal “Urdu” of Anjuman-e-Taraqqi Urdu India and were later compiled in the form of books entitled Khutbat-e-Garcin de Tassy and Maqalat-e-Garcin de Tassy. The work of Garcin de Tassy is very important because it was done at a time when the people here did not even bother to record the history of Urdu literature and the means of communication were missing.
