Yak Saraye (یاک سرائے) Safarnama by Mustansar Hussain Tarar. Urdu Safarnama Yak Saraye is the sixteenth travelogue authored by Tarar Sahab, and it unfurls the awe-inspiring beauty of northern Pakistan in the most picturesque manner. The author, who has previously regaled his readers with unforgettable memoirs of his international sojourns, now focuses on the domestic landscape, exploring his homeland’s rugged and stunning terrain.

Like many of Tarar Sahab’s journeys to the north, this narrative offers two types of experiences. Some of his travelogues feature his family members as travel companions, while others, including this one, present a band of friends accompanying him. Mian Farzand Ali, a notable name, is part of this expedition.

“Yak Saraye” chronicles an adventurous trek towards Lake Karambar, inspired by a photograph of the renowned mountaineer Nazir Sabir that adorns Tarar Sahab’s table. Along with a group of five or six friends, the author embarks on this exhilarating journey through Ishkuman, Virgoth Glacier, Chalaadi, Sukhtarabad Valley, and across Chitboi Glacier and Pamir before finally reaching Karambar Lake.

As readers follow this expedition, they, too, feel swept away by the mesmerizing blue waters of Lake Karambar. Tarar Sahab’s vivid imagery and evocative writing style create an immersive experience, producing a symphony of sounds that echo around the reader, enhancing the sense of being in that place at that moment.

One of the distinctive features of “Yak Saraye” is its portrayal of the transient yet intense relationships between mountaineers and porters. Mirroring his earlier work “Shimshal e Bemisal,” where he introduces the reader to the head porter “Rajb,” Tarar Sahab presents another memorable character, Ahad, in “Yak Saraye.” Ahad, a porter, embodies the resilience and strength of the local people in the north, leaving a lasting impression on the reader.

“Yak Saraye” is a substantial volume of 125 pages. While there are moments where the narrative might seem to stall, it quickly rebounds, painting scenes that rekindle the reader’s interest and pull them back into the tale. The reader is often left with a renewed eagerness to follow the author’s trail, traversing the majestic landscapes of northern Pakistan.
